Exam Cancellations: Supporting Students Through Uncertainty at Repton Dubai
The exam period is typically a defining moment for Sixth Form students, but recent cancellations of A-levels and GCSEs across the region have reshaped expectations for many families. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with Matthew Whittaker, Assistant Headteacher Sixth Form at Repton Dubai, about how schools and students are navigating this period of change.
Matthew explained that maintaining structure and routine has been key, with students continuing their regular timetables through live online lessons, supported by recorded resources and ongoing feedback. While the focus has shifted from final exams to teacher assessed grades, students are continuing to produce high-quality work that contributes to a comprehensive portfolio of evidence, including classwork, coursework, and mock assessments.
He highlighted the extensive internal moderation processes in place to ensure fairness and consistency, as well as the importance of keeping students engaged and motivated despite the change in assessment methods. Alongside academic support, wellbeing remains a priority, with daily tutor check-ins and close monitoring of student engagement to ensure any concerns are addressed quickly.
Matthew also reassured families that universities are familiar with this approach, having adopted similar measures in recent years, and continue to make offers based on predicted grades supported by robust evidence. For parents, he emphasised the importance of maintaining a calm and supportive home environment, encouraging routine, open communication, and balance.
Reflecting on the experience, Matthew spoke about the strong sense of community across the school, with staff, students, and parents working together to support one another. His advice to students was simple but impactful: stay consistent, attend lessons, act on feedback, and focus on doing the small things well each day.
This conversation offers reassurance and practical guidance for families navigating an uncertain exam season, while highlighting the resilience and adaptability of school communities.
