Nursery life may look like fun and games, but it’s the foundation for lifelong learning. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, Mena Press, Group Nursery Academic Lead at Dovecote Nursery, joined Helen Farmer to discuss the value of play-based learning in early childhood.

Mena explained how children naturally learn through sensory exploration and imaginative activities – from painting to water trays – with essential academic skills like counting and letter recognition developing organically along the way. At Dovecote, classrooms are designed with distinct learning zones, and children are empowered to make choices within a structured routine.

Strong relationships between staff, children, and families play a vital role, helping young learners feel secure and ready to thrive. Mena also shared practical guidance for parents, from managing separation anxiety by aligning home and nursery values, to travel-friendly play ideas such as homemade Play-Doh, interactive toys, and storybooks.

Parents are regularly invited into the classroom to share stories and connect with the children, an initiative that underscores Dovecote’s commitment to building community. While summer camps will pause this year due to maintenance, the nursery remains fully booked for the new academic year, a reflection of its nurturing environment and strong links with Repton schools.
