A-Level Results Day: Looking Beyond the Grades
A-Level Results Day can bring celebration and excitement, but it can also be a time of uncertainty for students and families as they consider university offers and what comes next. In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer welcomed Annette Drake, Head of Senior at Repton Dubai, to discuss how students and parents can navigate results day and the decisions that follow.
Annette reflected on the resilience and determination shown by this year’s graduating cohort, who have navigated significant disruption and uncertainty throughout their education. She highlighted the importance of keeping results in perspective, reminding students that one set of grades does not define their future and that there are many different routes to success.
For students who may not have received the results they hoped for, Annette encouraged them to be kind to themselves, keep an open mind and explore the options available. From university clearing and alternative courses to foundation programmes, resits and gap years, she explained that an unexpected result can lead to a different, and sometimes equally rewarding, pathway. She also encouraged families not to panic and to seek guidance from their school and university teams when considering the next steps.
The conversation also explored the role parents can play on results day, the value of researching universities and courses carefully, and why students should consider their interests, strengths and long-term goals rather than focusing solely on university prestige. Annette also discussed when remarks may be worth considering and how taking a gap year can give young people valuable time to gain experience, reflect on their choices and prepare for university life.
Above all, Annette reminded students that success extends far beyond A-Level grades. Character, determination, resilience, hard work and how they treat others will continue to shape their journey long after results day.
