Student Voices Leading Environmental Change at Repton Dubai
Environmental education is becoming increasingly important, but how can schools discuss topics like climate change and extinction without creating fear or overwhelm? In a recent Eye on Education episode on Dubai Eye 103.8, host Helen Farmer spoke with Wania Mirza and Andrew Segal, Year 10 students at Repton Dubai, about their student-led environmental podcast, Conservation Calls.
Launched in 2024 in partnership with the Mohammed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund, the podcast explores endangered and rediscovered species, beginning with the Hibiscus delphos woody, a plant once thought extinct. Through research and interviews, the students aim to make conservation feel accessible and hopeful, highlighting that positive change is possible.
Andrew shared how researching lesser-known species has deepened his connection to nature, while Wania reflected on how young people, growing up with technology and global awareness, have both the tools and responsibility to protect the environment. Inspired by her experience, she hopes to pursue engineering and explore sustainable innovations such as hydrogen-powered cars.
The conversation highlighted the importance of outdoor learning and peer-to-peer dialogue in building environmental responsibility. Through initiatives like Conservation Calls, Repton Dubai students are showing that education can inspire action, and that the next generation is ready to lead meaningful change.
