| Riding for the Disabled |
TAt the beginning of the spring break myself, Mr. Atkins and some of our students were invited down to the RDA to meet a few of the riders and ponies and get an insight as to what they do. The two riders put on a lovely display for us, assisted by their dedicated volunteers. |
|
Sandra, an RDA volunteer explained to us how one of their riders had completely turned around since the start of his riding lessons, going from being a young boy who would not speak, display emotion or even walk unassisted; to a boy who was full of laughter and smiles. As we watched him walk away from his pony laughing and holding his mum’s hand, it became quite clear just how beneficial the work of the RDA is. An additional surprise for all the students, both from Repton and RDA, was that a very famous horseman was also paying a visit that day. Mr. Monty Roberts, who is famous worldwide for developing a method of communicating with horses using their natural body language and a technique he calls ‘Join-up’. It was a lovely opportunity for the children to meet the horsey celebrity and pose for a few photos with him!
Watch this space for an announcement of a fantastic competition where you can get creative whilst raising money for the RDA! In our Autumn Term, as part of our extra-curricular program I will also be taking students from upper juniors and secondary down to the RDA to assist the volunteers.
