The Middle Section Curriculum – Years 7 to 9

The Repton Dubai Key Stage 3 Curriculum is first and foremost based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales. However, as we are an international school with a vast range of nationalities, this curriculum has been adapted to include other topics and concepts. The Curriculum is influenced by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) which prepares pupils for the IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) in Key Stage 5. Subjects differ from the National Curriculum of England and Wales to varying degrees, often adapting to include material specific to this region of the world or avoid any culturally sensitive issues. This document aims to give you a general outline of the subjects being taught.

Examinations

At Key Stage 3, pupils will sit internal examinations in all subjects, with the exception of Art and Drama, towards the end of the third term in each year. This will take the form of an examination week and pupils and parents will be given advance notice of the dates. In addition to these formal examinations pupils should expect to have regular in class assessments throughout the Key Stage.

Self Assessment

Throughout Key Stage 3 pupils will regularly complete self assessment and evaluation. I doing so they will highlight strengths and weaknesses, along with areas for improvement. At Repton we feel that it is important to give pupils responsibility for their own learning and we aim to make all our pupils independent learners.

At Repton Dubai pupils experience a 40 lesson week, with each lesson lasting 40 minutes. Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups with the exception of Mathematics and some MFL classes, which set pupils by ability throughout the Key Stage. Two lessons per week will be dedicated House Time, which will incorporate assemblies, PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) and mentoring.

All pupils will study the following compulsory subjects:

English 4 lessons per week
Mathematics 4 lessons per week
Science 4 lessons per week*
Second Language 3 lessons per week
Arabic 4 lessons per week
History 2 lessons per week
Geography 2 lessons per week
Art 2 lessons per week
Music 2 lessons per week
Drama 2 lessons per week
Physical Education 4 lessons per week*
Information Technology 2 lessons per week
Design Technology 2 lessons per week

*In Year 9, the number of Science lessons increases to 6 to allow 2 lessons to be dedicated to each individual Science. To accommodate this, the number of lessons of Physical Education falls to 2.

Pupils in Key Stage 3 need to decide which languages to study. They are able to choose from French, German, Spanish and Mandarin. Obviously, except in extenuating circumstances, this choice will be made at the start of Year 7 and not change.

If a pupil is registered as Islamic on the Repton registration form they are required by KHDA to follow an Islamic Studies option. For all pupils that this does not apply to, an additional option, accounting for two lessons should be chosen from several options including additional English and Mathematics.
