English

English is taught with four periods in Year 7 to 9 and five periods in Years 10 and 11. Incorporated into the teaching of English at Repton is both the teaching of Language and Literature. The ultimate aim is to build up to IGCSE for two qualifications in both Language and Literature. In the Sixth Form all pupils study English as part of the IB Diploma.

FIRST LANGUAGE ENGLISH AT IGCSE
The aims of the syllabus are the same for all pupils. These aims are set out below and describe the educational purposes of a course in First Language English for the IGCSE examination. They are not listed in order of priority.
The aims are to:
• Enable pupils to communicate accurately, appropriately and effectively in speech and writing;
• Enable pupils to understand and respond appropriately to what they hear, read and experience;
• Encourage pupils to enjoy and appreciate variety of language;
• Complement pupils’ other areas of study by developing skills of a more general application (e.g. analysis, synthesis, drawing of inferences);
• Promote pupils’ personal development and an understanding of themselves and others.
The syllabus is divided into reading, speaking and listening, directed writing and composition. At Repton we enable pupils to undertake the 50% coursework option.

ENGLISH LITERATURE AT IGCSE
These describe the educational purposes of a course in Literature for the IGCSE examination and are the same for all pupils. They are not listed in any order of priority.
The aims are to encourage and develop pupils’ ability to:
• Enjoy the experience of reading literature;
• Understand and respond to literary texts in different forms and from different periods and cultures;
• Communicate an informed personal response appropriately and effectively;
• Appreciate different ways in which writers achieve their effects;
• Experience literature’ s contribution to aesthetic, imaginative and intellectual growth;
• Explore the contribution of literature to an understanding of areas of human concern.
All pupils study a mixture of drama, poetry and prose. Once again we enable pupils to undertake the coursework option (25% of the final mark).
